Commercial enterprise and organization have only one ultimate reason to exist, as per Peter Drucker shared so many years ago, it exists to provide product and services for the customer who needs it, and wants to use you and at the price they feel comfortable to trade with you. So, all the commercial enterprises need to be a profit center, because that is the invisible hand to guide and make sure the organization is focused on delivering market needed products and in exchange for the revenue to make the organization continue to have the reason to exist.
It is the same principle for you as “employee”, a product, are you delivering value to your “customer”, in this case, the employer who hired the employee for. As long as the value continues to demonstrate via the given project assignment and you can continue to deliver it on time, on cost, on quality, in relation to other workers, you will be human capital, instead of expenses.
