Build your own Shark Appliance

CACE Technologies provides the Shark Appliance software components and TurboCap high-performance, GbE capture cards and the user provides the appliance hardware platform.

  • Cost effective solution –the user provides the appliance hardware platform using already-available or new hardware
  • Match Shark Appliance performance – meet the minimum hardware platform specifications to match Shark Appliance performance
  • Flexible platform options – the user provides CPU, Memory, and Storage to meet the user’s specific performance need.

The integration of Pilot Consoles and Shark Appliances provides a seamless distributed network analysis, recording, visualization, monitoring, and reporting system.

Shark Appliance Kits come in two configurations, both of which have been optimized to support high-performance packet recording, integration with Wireshark and, together with the Pilot Console, provide a platform for distributed live and off-line network analysis, visualization, monitoring, troubleshooting, and reporting.

Check out the Shark Appliance Kit Datasheet for an example hardware platform specification designed to match capture and display performance of a Shark Appliance.

Shark Appliance Kit Features

Wireshark Within

Wireshark Within The Shark Appliance Kit includes the only network analysis software fully integrated with Wireshark, the world’s most popular network protocol analyzer. This integration makes the prodigious collection of Wireshark Display Filters available for use within the network analysis software engine. Using the visual selection and drill-down features of the Pilot Console, the “Send to Wireshark” feature is used to export only the selected subset of the traffic to the Pilot Console for detailed packet protocol inspection with Wireshark.

Analysis, Monitoring, and Reporting Software Engine

The Shark Appliance Kit includes the same network analysis, monitoring, and reporting engine that comes with Shark Appliances. This includes an analysis and monitoring software engine supporting a wide variety of traffic analysis metrics (called Views) and network protocols to meet all of a networks engineer’s monitoring, reporting, and troubleshooting needs.

Shark Packet Recorder

The Shark Packet Recorder is a custom “dump-to-disk” application capable of continuous high-fidelity recording of multi-gigabit per second network traffic. An optimized storage system has been created to provide the required bandwidth to sustain line-rate traffic recording without packet loss. The Shark Packet Recorder can support multiple, simultaneous “dump-to-disk” sessions called Capture Jobs. The network traffic storage associated with a Capture Job is represented in the management software, the Pilot Console, as a data repository called a Job Trace which can potentially grow to multiple terabytes in size. Through the use of a powerful and intuitive drag-and-drop interface in the Pilot Console, the user can quickly isolate time intervals of interest within a Job Trace and perform in-depth analysis, traffic visualization, and drill-down on these time slices.

TurboCap: Line-Rate Multi-Gigabit Ethernet Traffic Capture

TurboCapTurboCap dual-port GigE capture cards are able to sustain line-rate, multi-gigabit per-second packet capture with any size packets. In addition, TurboCap supports pass-thru and traffic aggregation modes that, when used in combination, eliminate the need for an aggregating tap.

The Pilot Console – Centralized Analysis,
Monitoring, and Troubleshooting

Pilot Console
The Pilot Console is an enhanced version of CACE Pilot capable of accessing and controlling one or more remote Shark Appliances.
