Natural user interface or in short NUI refers to a system for HCI where a user operates by intuitive actions associated to natural, everyday human behaviour such as touch, gesture and voice. Nowadays, more innovations are designed based on the application of NUI. While the application of NUI brought many benefits to people, the implementation is as well challenging. What are the challenges in implementing NUI in innovation ?
One of the challenge in the implementation of NUI in innovation is longevity. Rapid development in computer technology not only increase the number of innovation of devices with the application, it also increase people expectation on the outcome of the innovation. Therefore, regardless the objective of NUI which focuses on improving user experiences when interacting with the NUI based devices, the inability of the innovation to meet the expectation leads it to shorter shelf life in the market. In addition, as the technology advances, more advanced innovation will overshadow the capabilities of the previous innovation thus causing it to lost it presence in the market.
Next is usability. Usability means the ability of an innovation to carry out its functions efficiently, safely and satisfactorily. The key success to a successful innovation are usability and user experience. The lack of evaluation on usability will indirectly affect user experiences. As a results, the innovation will become an irrelevant release into the market. In addition, the application of NUI do not fit every consumer. For instance, A touch-screen interface is undeniably convenient to most people but it is a useless to visually impaired individuals.
Another challenge is compatibility. With the ever evolving technology, a more advance innovation might be incompatible with the older version product or devices. Also, certain software may require the latest version update to run on certain devices.
Safety and health issues. Certain application of NUI that involve gesture recognition such as sport simulation game may cause injuries due to the lack of understanding on the use of correct posture or overexertion of force while playing the video game.
All in all, challenges in innovation is inevitable. However, it should be viewed as a mean of improvement instead of hindrance.
