It had been 64 years since Malaysia gain her independence. It was our national heroes who had made us able to enjoy freedom and independence. Today, it is our duty to keep Malaysia as an independent nation.
31st August 1957 marked the most meaningful date to Malaysia as it is announced as Malaysia Independence Day. That day, “Merdeka! Merdeka! Merdeka!” which mean independent or freedom was chanted by the first prime minister of Malaysia, Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj and then echoed by thousands of Malaysians in the blissful ceremonies.
Merdeka day (Hari Merdeka) is also known as the independence day or national day. Every year, Merdeka Parade will be carried out in celebration to Malaysia Independence Day. Flag raising, Rukunegara recitation, singing the national anthem, cultural performance, civil-military march past are among the events that happen during the Merdeka parade.
Like last year, the celebration of Malaysia Independence Day will be done in moderation due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Nevertheless, that should not deter patriotism. Malaysians are advised to keep celebrating by raising Malaysia’s flag at home. Also, this year the phrase “Malaysia Prihatin” is kept as Malaysia Independence Day theme. A meaningful phrase that emphasises the need of having concern and care.
The movement control order (MCO) during Covid-19 Pandemic had indirectly thought us about the importance of freedom. We feel suffocated when our movement become restricted as we tried to comply with MCO. Therefore, let’s appreciate the efforts of our national heroes and front liners in making Malaysia an independent nation for 64 years by supporting the growth of Malaysia and follow SOP in order to prevent the spreading of Covid-19.
