Songkran festival, is once upon a time, the traditional Thai new year festival. The word Songkran means ‘to move’ or ‘step forward’ in Sanskrit. Today, Songkran Festival is celebrated in Thailand every year on the 13th, 14th and 15th of April.
There are many significant activities or events in the Songkran festival which reflects the literal meaning of Songkran which include welcoming new year and new beginning through cleaning houses and public places such as temples and schools, receiving new year blessing through showering water to buddha images and monks and making merits through offering alms to monk, releasing birds and fishes to their natural habitat, also dismissing last year misfortunes or welcoming luck by mannerly splashing clean or scented water to others. Not only Songkran festival brings family and friends together, but also the society. People working together in doing good deed and merrily splashing water as a gesture of well wishes to each other.
