For those who watch the Apple first event in 2022, out from anyone expect, M2 no yet, but come with premium M1 chip, combine two M1 Max from last year to create a single chip 20 CPU cores, a 64-core GPU, and 32 Neural Engine cores, up to up to 128GB of Unified Memory, start at USD 4k. M2 may need to wait for the next round of the product launch.
Normal user will need a 64 core CPU? This is why it markets intensive studio works, for the workstation segment. But with the current new M1 chip and breakaway from the Intel ecosystem, it also means to run old apps but not in native ones in the M1 Mac OSX. If the existing market can not find the use case, it really becomes known as an overkill machine at the time for launch. As time goes by, cheaper and better always come, it becomes a benchmark at the time.
For use for being a server? What can it be, where maybe Intel or AMD would be a more logical choice. Beside that, we saw last year’s M1 chip from the ipad pro now put into the new ipad air. We keep seeing Apple try to create and attempt to influence the market for something their existing market may not need, for an industrial market where standard and ecosystem whether you can build up something that compatible with the rest of the world.
Let face it, WinTel or Windows and Intel remain the strong force working together, and create an open ecosystem to allow a lot of the vendors to build their product on top of their ecosystem.
On the positive side, Apple attempts to provide a benchmark for the rest of hardware vendor product performance. People will expect even more powerful machines year after year, but not all the computing power a typical consumer or knowledge worker may need. Hardware is depreciated at even faster speed.
Investing in hardware, year after year, or better yet, offloading computing load over the cloud, may be a good viable option, as who will need to access high performance all the time? To get more things done by less people, it may make business sense, you also need to sort out the application needed, so again, a remaining one sided dominance market won by the WinTel strategic alliance. New Apple Max 1 Ultra by combining two M1 Max chips this year, next year we expect another new product combining two M1 Ultra chips? It most likely will be the case.
