As more and more social media giants are being reported for collecting extensive users data and use for various experiments to predict and show for more likely advertisement response, the wave call for control of the user privacy continues to be in the area of everyone’s concern.
Social media giants continue to hold the monopoly. If you do not grant them permission, you can not use their services. More and more users are concerned how those personal information you share on your social media profile and platforms can be extracted out.
If you are just about name, location, age, job role, marital status, headshot, most of the people are ok with it. But most of the people is not ok for what topic or post they like, what kind of post they click, or what they buy, what they join, what they subscribed being collect and put into big data, then analyze and create and attached to the group of persona or then parking them under different group of experiment to more accurate predict our behaviour. Such as showing a topic or post we are most likely to act on, so they can collect advertiser incentive with it.
Due to nature of social media giant is operate globally in nature, so specific nation and country is very difficult to control data privacy and deal with social media giant. If they want, they can simply shut down a specific tiny nation market, making it very hard to enforce and balancing the data privacy concern for their people, who depend on their service to reach the rest of the world’s countries. Rise concern for data being collected by social media platforms, it is rising the concern from years to years, but we see little progress for how it really universally addresses it for the global users at large.
We are living in the digital economy, most of the business, work and life is connected to the digital economy. Moving forward, we expect to have a stronger and cross global association or some kind will raise the power, where empowered by the regulations. But at the time being, it is the social media platforms who will be milking data and fuel for their commercial operations with various product offerings, where they can get revenue from offering free services to mass consumers.
