For the User Interface (UI) Design, every developer who is involved in it, within their career will use either one or both. Both have their unique use case and strength. For instance, if on premise is required or to be sensitive to the development process, then Sketch is the way to go due to the need to download and install. Sketch data will continue to be preserved on premise and never exposed in the cyber worlds or contained in supplier servers, where cyber attack and leak cases keep happening here and there. For those who open for an online tool that works through a browser, it is where Figma makes the stand. For those who work in native Mac operating system, Sketch will be better due to it being Mac based.
Figma has a collaborative design feature that allows you to share designs with members of your team who can work alongside you in real-time. This makes it far more appealing for design teams and clients who want a hand in the process. As the world keeps moving toward digital workspace, virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI), all the on premise and installed based applications can be web browsers with relatively easy with the VDI implementation, and meet some very high security standard workspace requirements, where data must be keep inside enterprise own infrastructure and meet regulatory compliance.
Think out of the box, it can be mixed for most of the use case deployment scenarios as well. It makes sense for those in transition from one to another to adopt hybrids. Sketch continues to set the gold standard in UI design for years to come due to their market share. Sketch is a native desktop application which means it has a lot of interactive control and options you can operate and functionality, not to mention for the local access make it work from anywhere, and not depend on constant internet access, such as web-based tools like Figma. With Sketch launching a real-time collaboration app in 2021, the previous reason to use Figma’s collaboration features may decline.
For design teams that work together to edit projects or make notes on various design elements in the real time, via the cloud, is what may be Figma’s initial success. It is a web-based application, as long as you can maintain the internet access bandwidth, you should be just fine. Instead of adopting either one mentality, hybrid may be a good approach.
