Every adoption of new technology trend brings about many questions; most importantly is it the right move to make? Inarguably the adoption is challenging especially a technology that is in the early stage of evolution. Therefore, what are the challenges related to adoption of Metaverse?
1. Data security and privacy issues
Metaverse which is the integration of technology such as web3, spatial computing and many more involve the use of massive amount of data. For interaction to happen in a virtual venue, authentication and identity information are crucial in order for users to create an avatar to move around the environment. As metaverse is still immature in many areas, certain security factors may be neglected as stakeholders are excited in providing the best user experience according to consumers demand focusing on the importance of complying with data protection regulation. The people around the world had become more concern on their data security and privacy, however one emerging technology requires time to prove its reliability. The limit of use of data in metaverse is unclear and therefore consumers metaverse may be losing in trustworthiness.
2. Limited participation
The metaverse that exist till now requires auditory, visual and certain body movement to enhance its adoption. This makes it not available to users with disabilities on those department.
3. Cost for equipment and implementation
As metaverse is the combinatorial innovation that works through the integration of multiple technologies and trends, the adoption of metaverse needs more than one equipment and implementation. The cost ranges from developing the virtual environment and providing every equipment required for its implementation, for example virtual headsets, licenses for virtual reality content also learning and training. In other words, the beginning to Metaverse is expensive, and proper plan for investment is needed for the adoption to be worthy.
4. Financial fraud issue
As metaverse allows virtual shop or products to be set up for easier trading activity, certain products may be counterfeited or fake or even the seller or a buyer is a fraud. Additionally, law and regulation in metaverse is unclear. This make the cases of financial fraud in metaverse hard to overcome making customers to have a second opinion on getting involve with metaverse.
All in all, just like how QRcode scanning was first introduced its use to the world and now had no longer becoming a question on ‘what is a QRCode? and how to use it?’, there may or will be one day that metaverse will become the next normal in our life. Adoption of Metaverse is expected to increase in the future. While its adoption are mostly related to communication, gaming and entertainment purposes, the reliability and capabilities of Metaverse will definitely expand as technology advances. Challenges are there and should be expected. The most important is to know and understand those challenges and the way to overcome them.
